Actors' individuality and tenure in the industry are largely influenced by the versatility of their roles and the resultant impact they leaves in audiences' minds. To achieve versatility, actors are forever seeking novel portrayals, ones that would prove their exceptional acting skills and bring them wide recognition. Some 'borrow' ideas from Hollywood (but do not acknowledge the same), others choose movie scripts based on real-life incidents and go through terrific makeovers to become the characters they play, studying and copying the gait and mannerisms of they persons they are to portray (for instance, MGR as a hunchback (then becoming normal in Aadimai Penn, Sivaji Ganesan as a leper in Navarathri, Suriya as a hunchback, Kamal as a dwarf, Jyotika as a blind girl), gaining or losing weight, growing their hair long or shaving off their locks or moustaches...
Variety in an actor's portrayal depends on so many factors - the director's vision about the character, and, how far the actor's interest and inclination will take him to live, think and dream like the character portrayed - these are most important. Even without any significant physical changes, some actors like Prithviraj get instant recognition for the variety in their roles. Since his debut in Parijatham, Prithviraj has been doing leads and non-leads, even some negative roles. Also, a few like Paruthiveeran Karthi receive several honours and considerable appreciation in their debut roles.
